Statement re. recently enacted Missouri law pertaining to abortion services

CHANCELLOR-ELECT ANDREW D. MARTIN, PhD
DAVID H. PERLMUTTER, MD, EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR MEDICAL AFFAIRS AND DEAN, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

We are deeply concerned about the impact that the recently enacted Missouri law regarding access to abortion services will have on the practice of medicine, especially the ability of physicians to deliver medically necessary care. We are also troubled by provisions of the new law that expose physicians to criminal penalties when making complex medical decisions. We will vigorously support the right of our physicians to exercise their best medical judgment in the treatment of their patients.

We recognize this is a sensitive issue around which there are strong feelings and varying perspectives. All members of our university community – faculty, students and staff – are encouraged to give voice to and advocate on this and other issues they care about.
